Greetings from Gulf Shores Elementary School. I am Julie Pierce. This is my sixth year as principal, and my desire is to continue to serve the children and their families with academic excellence. I am a teacher at heart and know that education is one of the most rewarding careers a person can pursue. My passion is improving education through a commitment to learning and meaningful relationships, all while having fun!
The 2013-2014 school year is proving to be one of the most exciting ever! The Digital Renaissance will expand in January of 2014. Laptop computers will be provided for each student in third grade and an iPad for each child in kindergarten, first and second grades!
iPads are currently in use in every classroom along with Promethean boards, responders, Neoboards, and document cameras. We have one hard-wired computer lab, a rolling laptop cart, and a rolling iPad cart. This 21st century learning opportunity is bringing the world to each student and increasing the depth and richness of instruction. In math, the full implementation of Investigations is in full swing. Teachers and students are experiencing math conceptually through the use of hands on manipulatives, deep questioning, and math talk. To support these demanding instructional programs, two staff members are in place to support the teachers and the students. Nicole Godbold, Instructional Partner Coach, and Staci Robinson, Technology Coach, meet weekly with grade levels to ensure that literacy instruction and project based learning are embedded in lessons across the curriculum.
We are very proud to present our brand new special needs playground to serve our special needs and preK children. A rubber-based mat provides a smooth surface for wheel chair bound students to move about and experience easily accessible activities. Even a double slide enables children to slide with an adult for extra assistance.
Extracurricular opportunities also exist for students. We have an after school music and instrument ensemble called The Dolphin Sound. These intermediate students practice weekly and perform regularly. There is also an Archery Club, Technology Club, Random Acts of Kindness Club, and Giraffe Heroes Club. We just received a 21st Century After School Care Grant which will open the doors to additional seasonal opportunities like Tae Kwon Do, piano lessons, tutoring, Lego Club and much more. We have two competition teams, Coastal Kids and Tech Club. We are hoping to add an archery competition club this year. Children in grades 3-6 may run for office in our Student Council. Students in sixth grade assist in designing the school’s yearbook. Another student group is called Dolphin Allies. These students are our ambassadors and help to welcome and orient new students to Gulf Shores Elementary School!
Four parent advisory committees and one student advisory committee exist to provide constant feedback, encouragement and constructive criticism to see that we are serving your children in the very best way we can. Your support and input are very important and are always welcome to help continue to make Gulf Shores Elementary School the very best it can be!
